Curriculum Overview

Our intention at the Brookvale Groby Learning Campus is to service the needs of all of our students by providing a broad, balanced and coherent curriculum or programme of study. Our aim is to develop and nurture young people to become well educated, well-rounded individuals with the skills and characteristics to contribute fully to society. We strive to offer a curriculum that will provide students with the opportunity to meet and exceed their academic potential, as well as equipping them with a growth mindset for learning. The curriculum is comprehensive and balanced throughout Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 but also provides the flexibility for a degree of choice at Key Stage 4 and the ability to specialise at Key Stage 5. Embedded within the curriculum is the opportunity for students to experience and develop their spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness as well as promoting their reading, writing, communication and maths skills.

Assessment
In all subjects at all Key Stages, students are formally assessed at least 6 times per year. This assessment data is then used by staff when reporting home to parents, From September 2016 the Campus will begin to introduce new assessment measure to judge students’ progress over time at Key Stage 3. These measure reflect both the removal of National Curriculum Levels and the move to numbered grades at GCSE.
From 2017 for English and Maths GCSEs, and from 2018 for all other subjects, the A* - G GCSE grades will be replaced by a points scale of 1 to 9; 9 will be the highest grade and 1 the lowest. The table below shows how the new number grades relate to the old GCSE grades. The information will help parents/carers understand how your child will be assessed during the 2016-2017 academic year:

Years 7, 8 and 9
Students in Key Stage 3 in September 2016 will be assessed in all subjects using the new 9 – 1 grade system. Reports to parents will explain these grades in more detail.

Year 10

Students beginning Year 10 in September 2016 will be assessed in most GCSE subjects using the new 9 – 1 grade system. Some subjects will still be reported using the A* - G grade system. BTEC subjects will continue to be assessed using Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction* grades.

Year 11

Students beginning Year 11 in September 2016 will be assessed in GCSE English and GCSE Maths, using the new 9 – 1 grade system. The table below shows how the new grades link with the old GCSE grades. Other GCSE subjects will continue to use the existing A*-G GCSE grading system. BTEC and OCR National subjects will continue to be assessed using Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction* grades.

Years 12-13

Students beginning Year 12 and 13 in September 2016 will continue to have all of their A Level exams graded using the A*-E system. BTEC subjects which continue to be assessed using Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction* grades. All subjects will be 2 year courses.

Target Setting

Students in Years 7 – 11 will be set an aspirational target grade based on their Key Stage 2 and current performance. This target grade will be shared with parents/carers as part of a student’s report home but can also be found on the front of each student’s exercise book in all subjects. The target grade is complicated as it is based on the actual marks in the SATs rather than the level itself.

Students in Years 12 and 13 are set their targets based on their performance at GCSE using the ALPS National target setting information. The campus will constantly review student’s progress against their target grade. If a student consistently meets or exceeds their target, then they will be issued with a revised aspirational target for the following year.
